Dear Friends,
With Pesach fast approaching and this being Erev Shabbat, I’m sure you all have better things to do right now than read this e-mail. However I would like to briefly explain a few of the times listed.
Bedikat chametz (the search) is performed the night before Pesach. If one is unable to search one’s house or apartment at the appropriate time – for example if one is leaving for Pesach – then one must search beforehand though without saying the blessing.
Although Pesach begins Monday night, the prohibitions for eating and possessing chametz take affect the previous day. The times listed above represent the latest halakhic times based on New York. For those will be travelling, please consult page 6 of the OU Passover Guide (page 5 of the PDF): http://program.ouradio.org/content/files/Pesach_Guide2010.pdf
Finally there is usually some confusion regarding the earliest time a seder can begin. During the Pesach Seder we fulfill multiple rabbinic and biblical commandments such as drinking the four cups of wine and eating matzah. Even though we may usually begin Shabbat or Yom Tov earlier in the day, in order to fulfill these commandments one must wait until halakhic nightfall. This may cause some difficulties for families with children; for special accommodations please feel free to contact me.
As always if anyone has question regarding these or any other Pesach issues, please contact me via e-mail at rabbi@stantonstshul.com or use our nifty new webform at: http://www.stantonstshul.com/rabbi-josh-yuter/contact-rabbi-yuter/
Shabbat Shalom!
