As we prepare to celebrate Chanukah, a holiday celebrating survival against all odds, we are horrified and heartbroken to learn of the deadly antisemitic attack in Sydney, Australia. Our hearts go out to the grieving families and we pray for the full and speedy recovery of those who are in need of healing. It is extra painful that this act of hate came at such a festive time of the year and we stand in solidarity with the Jewish community of Sydney, as well as Jewish communities all over the world, who are feeling scared and vulnerable.
Now, more than ever, we find solace and strength in our traditions and in holding our loved ones tight. We hope that as we gather together with family, friends, and community members, we will find comfort as we chase away the cold and darkness with the illumination and warmth of the Chanukah lights.
Members of the downtown community will join in prayer this evening in Washington Square park, and all are welcome to join. The details are below.
On a practical note, I am grateful to our shul admin, Penina, for working with the Seventh Precinct to ensure that our shul has security measures in place. They are aware of our upcoming community dinner and will provide us with additional coverage.
Wishing you light and better news to come, Rabbi Birkeland
