Arts at Stanton
Past Exhibitions at the Stanton Street Balcony
Join us on December 12, 6:00-8:00 pm for the opening reception of Yiddish NY’s 2019 Visual Arts Exhibition, UTOPIA – Visions and Traditions. Free admission.
Running through January 21st, the exhibition explores humankind’s longing for an ideal society, where all people are treated with respect, all of their needs are met and there is no war and fear. UTOPIA will provide a space for participating artists to explore what such a world would look like and how to create such an existence, drawing from traditional constructions of utopias and creating their own. The YNY Visual Arts Exhibition is curated by Deborah Ugoretz and Tine Kindermann.
Papercutting has been a common Jewish art form since the Middle Ages, connected with various customs and ceremonies, and associated with holidays and family life. Our artists practice traditional papercutting as well as more modern interpretations of this long standing art form.
The Stanton Street show will feature 7 artists, each renowned in their field: Rachel Asarnow, recipient of a Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant and member of the Guild of American Papercutters; Dory Bergman; David Friedman, nominee for a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant; Dena Levie, who has been commissioned to produce works for Matisyahu and the Jewish Children's Museum in New York City; Diane Reich, who uses her art to highlight amazing facts and incredible narratives about Israel and whose work has been exhibited twice at the Belskie Museum of Art and Science; Deborah Ugoretz, recognized by the NJSCA as a master papercut artist and teacher who has received commissions from The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Jewish Theological Seminary, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research; and David Wander, whose work has been shown at Yad Vashem, and museums and religious spaces throughout America.
Please note: Gallery is ascended by a narrow set of stairs and is thus not easily accessible for persons using wheelchairs.
Opening Night: September 25, 2019, 6:30-8:30.
Following the opening, viewing is by appointment only.
