Join us for Jewtopia, a special concert at the Stanton Street Shul, a historic synagogue founded when the Lower East Side was the world’s biggest Jewish neighborhood. Two of the world’s leading contemporary performers of Yiddish music, NEA National Heritage Fellow Michael Alpert (Scotland) and tsimbl (cimbalom) player Pete Rushefsky (NYC), present exuberant and plaintive melodies discovered on travels to lost shtetls, emigre boardwalks, Hasidic homes and Soviet archives, as well as new songs that draw upon traditions from Yiddishland to Mexico to the Celtic Isles.

The concert is produced by the Center for Traditional Music and Dance and the Stanton Street Synagogue in conjunction with the 2019 Yiddish New York Visual Arts Exhibition, UTOPIAS: Visions and Tradition, and attendees will be able to visit the exhibition in the synagogue’s upper gallery.
