Passing On The Light: A Poetry Reading and Yiddish Singing Event for Auschwitz Liberation Day

Sunday, January 27, 2019 21 Shevat 5779

6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Come together at the historic Stanton Street Shul to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp. This special evening performance will feature writings and songs that shine light on the liberation aspect of this dark day and pass the light from an old generation to a new one.

Iris Tillman, who lived through WW2 in New York City, will share poetry from her recently published collection, "All This Happened Long Ago - It Happens Now." Julia Knobloch, of the next generation, will present poems from her forthcoming collection, "Do Not Return". Lori Leifer, also of the next generation, will perform Yiddish songs she has picked up from her jaunts at KlezKanada, YiddishNY, Folksbiene, Chulent, family gatherings and just being a Jew in NYC.

The performance will be dedicated in memory of Mara Esther Popper z"l, Lori's aunt and a German Jewish survivor of Nazism, who passed away on 22 Kislev of this year. (Mara is the 3rd child from the left in the photo below. The other children pictured are aunts and uncles who passed away some time ago. The photo was probably taken in Dillingen, Germany.)

Sorry, Registration has ended.
