FROM SCROLLS TO PRINT: THE JEWISH BOOK AS A CULTURAL ARTIFACT
Taught by Dr. Rachel Zohn Mincer Wednesday Night, Feb 19th, 7:30-9:00 pm
Don't miss the third and final session of Dr. Rachel Zohn Mincer's riveting history course on Wednesday, February 19, begins 7:30pm SHARP. Newcomers welcome!
The physical characteristics of Jewish books – not only their contents – are invaluable sources of information about Jewish history and culture. Explore the cultural connections of Jews to the societies in which they lived by examining illustrations, scripts and page layouts in Jewish books. Learn how changes in book format – from ancient scrolls to medieval manuscripts to printed books – affected the transmission of Jewish tradition and the nature of reading audiences. Through this visual encounter with Jewish books from different periods, gain a better understanding of the communities that produced them.
Dr. Rachel Zohn Mincer is a Jewish history scholar whose main field of interest is history of the Jewish book, particularly for the late medieval and early modern periods. Her research has focused on minhagim books and other types of ritual guides produced in Ashkenazic society. Since getting her Ph.D. in Jewish history from JTS, Rachel has taught in a variety of institutions, including NYU, the Academy for Jewish Religion, Queens College and Adelphi University. Jewish history is a second career for Rachel, who used to be a college mathematics instructor.
Rabbi Dov Lerea has been a professional educator for the past 35 years. Rabbi Dov is currently the Head of Judaic Studies at the Shefa School in New York, a day school for students with dyslexia and language-based learning disabilities. Rabbi Dov has an AB from Brown University in Religious Studies, an MA and Rabbinic degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary, a Rabbinic degree from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, an MA in Learning and Teaching from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and an Ed.D. from the Davidson Graduate School of Jewish Education at JTS. He is deeply committed to the Spanish-Portuguese heritage of his family, and is also a religiously, nutritionally and philosophically committed vegan.
Women's Tefillah Group to be Honored at Gala

Update from the Rabbinic Search Committee
Thanks to the many of you who attended the proba (try-out) Shabbat with Rabbi Welton and his family on January 24-25. Your input is greatly appreciated and helps to guide our next steps. If you have not yet done so, please complete a feedback survey about your experience with Rabbi Welton by clicking here.
We are arranging a second opportunity for community members and friends to meet Rabbi Welton on Sunday morning, March 22. Details will follow.
If you have any questions or prefer to provide your feedback in a different format, please reach out to any of us on the search committee. We have valued and continue to value the community's partnership and trust throughout the search for our kehillah's next spiritual leader.
Committee Members: Jeff Katz, Paul Ruffer, Marc Schwartzberg, and Jessica Spector
Update from the Security Committee
Responding to the insecure environment we live in, the rise in anti-Semitic incidents, and the concerns of our congregants, the Board recently undertook the installation of a security system including security cameras and monitors. The front door of the shul is locked while services are in progress. If you do not know the code, please knock loudly to be let in.
We are still recruiting committee members and a committee chair to oversee monitoring the cameras, developing an evacuation plan, and planning a fire drill. You will have the full support of the Board. Please speak with Jeff Katz or any Board member or email board@stantonstshul.com to get involved with this important committee!
Kiddushes are a joyous way to celebrate Shabbat and bring together our members and friends-- with good food and drink. Celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other event, commemorate a yahrzeit, or show appreciation for the extraordinary work being done in this Shul. We would love to share your special occasions.
We rely on your generosity to keep us going with weekly prayer services, kiddushes, children's programming, classes, women's tefillah, arts and cultural programs, and other events. Click here to donate!
