Preventing Coronavirus: Everyone is concerned about the spread of Coronavirus (COVID19). To prevent getting sick, the CDC recommends that people wash their hands often with soap and water, lathering for at least 20 seconds. They also say to avoid people who are sick, and for people to not touch their face with unwashed hands. Hand sanitizer bottles have been placed throughout the shul. Please use them freely. As a precautionary measure, we recommend that we not shake hands, kiss or embrace each other at shul.
Shabbat Zachor: On the Sabbath before Purim, the portion of the Torah dealing with Amalek is read. This day is called Shabbat Zachor, the Sabbath of Remembrance. It is a special mitzvah [commandment] of the Torah to hear the reading and thus remember. The reading at the Stanton Street Shul will take place at 10:30 AM. See you in Shul!
Daylight Savings: Remember to turn your clocks back an hour on Saturday night for daylight savings time. 2am will become 1am and we will magically gain an hour. Use the extra time to work on your costume for the Pre-Purim Masquerade Ball, or other worthy pursuits.

Purim and the Mitzvah of Giving Charity to the Less Fortunate
Who is obligated to fulfill the mitzvah of Matanot L'Evyonim, giving charity to the poor on Purim? Both men and women are obligated to give Matanot L'evyonim. Even a poor person who relies on charity to support himself is obligated to give Matanot L'evyonim.
You may fulfill the mitzvah by giving at the Stanton Street Shul. We will be collecting Matanot LeEvyonim on Purim evening and during the morning minyan on Purim day, and will distribute funds to those in need in our community on Purim.

FIRST LOOK: Shabbat Telamdeni with Emily Goldberg Winer, March 20-21
We will be hosting guest scholar Emily Goldberg Winer on March 20-21 for Shabbat Telamdeni, a program of JOFA and Yeshivat Maharat. Stay tuned for details.
Emily is a student at Yeshivat Maharat, a Wexner Graduate Fellow, and currently works as a rabbinic intern at the Columbia/Barnard Hillel. She most recently completed the Jewish Innovation Fellowship at the 92nd Street Y and directed a teen fellowship at the Hebrew Home at Riverdale. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Muhlenberg College where she studied Religion and Jewish Studies. There, she was a research and program intern at the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding. Committed to interfaith dialogue and pluralism, Emily is constantly exploring the traditions and stories of others. She has engaged in programs rooted in religious diversity, first among fellow Jews at the Bronfman Youth Fellowship and Drisha, and later across faiths at the Shalom Hartman Institute, Tanenbaum, and Auburn Seminary. Her most humbling experiences, however, came from her years of working at the Phoebe nursing home with residents living with dementia as well as the Lehigh County Jail where she facilitated text studies for men and women. Emily lives in Riverdale with her husband Jonah, a rabbinical student at Yeshivat Chovevai Torah.

Women's Tefillah Group to be Honored at Gala
Stanton Board member emeritus Malka Percal will accept an award on behalf of the Stanton Women's Tefilah Group at the Shul's Pre-Purim Masquerade Ball on Sunday, March 8. The long-running Women's Tefillah Group meets throughout the year at Stanton for davening and Torah readings on Shabbatot, Purim and Simchat Torah, and has hosted many bat mitzvah and kallah celebrations as well as speakers and scholars. This spring, founding member Rachel Mincer will offer classes in leyning Haftarah. Join us at the Gala to show appreciation for Malka and the WTG!
Update from the Security Committee
Responding to the insecure environment we live in, the rise in anti-Semitic incidents, and the concerns of our congregants, the Board recently undertook the installation of a security system including security cameras and monitors. The front door of the shul is locked while services are in progress. If you do not know the code, please knock loudly to be let in.
We are still recruiting committee members and a committee chair to oversee monitoring the cameras, developing an evacuation plan, and planning a fire drill. You will have the full support of the Board. Please speak with Jeff Katz or any Board member or email board@stantonstshul.com to get involved with this important committee!
Kiddushes are a joyous way to celebrate Shabbat and bring together our members and friends-- with good food and drink. Celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other event, commemorate a yahrzeit, or show appreciation for the extraordinary work being done in this Shul. We would love to share your special occasions.
We rely on your generosity to keep us going with weekly prayer services, kiddushes, children's programming, classes, women's tefillah, arts and cultural programs, and other events. Click here to donate!
