A Dvar Torah from Rabbinic Intern, Dvir Cahana
As we close Sefer Bamidbar for now, we turn our attention to Devarim. This book looks backwards on the 40 years in the dessert and retells our people's story with a fresh new perspective. It is called the Mishna Torah - the second torah, because it is Moshe's personal torah that he carries with himself as he bids Am Israel farewell and good luck in the next leg of their journey. The Mishna Torah is the magnum opus work of Rambam, a different famous Moses, who distilled his comprehensive halachic knowledge into an accessible and digestible manual. To Rambam, this was his version of a second torah.
What if each of us carried our own Sefer Torah, a Sefer Torah alongside the one that we carry with us communally? How would the collective narrative be altered ever so subtly? What would we choose to emphasize and what would we intentionally omit? Within a Torah scroll is an entire universe, what would you find in the universe of yours?
