Dear Friends,
Warmest greetings to the whole Stanton Community. Something that jumps out to me from this week’s parshah, parshat Balak, is the connection drawn between place and encounter with the Divine. We see that Balak brings Balaam to three separate locations with the hope that these different settings would bring about different instructions from God. On the one hand, “God’s glory fills the entire Earth” (Yesh. 6:3), not just specific locations. Furthermore, we see that no matter where Balak and Balaam go, God persists in making Balaam bless the people instead of cursing them. But on the other hand, whether it be Mount Sinai and the burning bush, or the Makom HaMikdash in Jerusalem, we see that location can, in fact, play an important role in our accessing God and so perhaps Balak and Balaam were onto something, even though their location changes ultimately proved ineffective.
Stanton is a special place and is a place in which I continue to feel emboldened to connect to my Creator as well as my fellow. I am humbled and very excited to be taking on the rabbinic role here and I want to thank you all for your support and confidence as well as the warm welcome you have continued to extend to me since moving to the Lower East Side last fall. I hope that our Jewish lives extend far beyond the walls of our shul but that we will, nevertheless, continue to make Stanton our spiritual and communal home base; our “garden beside a river” where anyone who walks in can’t help but exclaim “How goodly are your tents, oh Jacob, your dwelling places, Israel.”
Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Birkeland
Dear Stanton Community,
We are shaking from the war breaking out in Israel. Hamas has fired thousands of rockets, over 136 citizens are hostages, and over 1,200 Israelis are dead with thousands more wounded. There are also thousands dead in Gaza -- innocent civilians caught in the line of fire.
This is unprecedented and the most deadly attack on Israel in a generation. We must take action. In addition to our prayers, we ask you to consider making a generous donation to one of the listed causes.
The One who makes peace on high, may He bring peace down below to us, Dvir and Shalhevet Cahana
