LESPI’s Jane’s Walk and LES History Month Tours Coming in May! “History of the Lower East Side in Six Buildings” Walking Tour May 2 and 4! Join us in May for an in-depth tour of a select group of some of the Lower East Side’s greatest architectural treasures. Through their distinctive architecture, all of these buildings are neighborhood anchors today, linking the Lower East Side’s present to its past. They were built to support new arrivals during the time of mass European immigration in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Some continue to serve their original function while others have been repurposed. All represent the extraordinary heritage of this neighborhood. LESPI Vice President, Deborah Wye will lead the tour, “History on the Lower East Side,” on Friday, May 2 and on Sunday, May 4, both at 3:00 pm. LESPI, led by Ms. Wye, has researched and proposed these buildings to the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission, and is now anxiously awaiting their decision whether they will be moved toward landmarking. For further information, and to register for this free event, use the Jane’s Walk website: for the May 2 tour see HERE , for the May 4 tour see HERE .
“Warriors Seweckenamo and Kimlau: From Lenape Village to Chinatown” Walking Tour on May 4
LESPI Advisor Bayer Lee will present “Warriors Seweckenamo and Kimlau: From Lenape Village to Chinatown,” on Sunday, May 4, at 1:00 pm. This tour will trace the area’s rich history from the time it was a Native American village to the present day, as represented by Kimlau Square with its landmarked arch and statue of Chinese philosopher Lin Zexu (1785-1850).
Beginning at Collect Pond Park, once the site of a Lenape fresh water source, the tour will proceed to the heart of old Chinatown and through the notorious Five Points. Visits will include locations on Mott Street, Pell Street, and Doyers Street with its “Bloody Angle” and former Chinese theater. The tour will end at what was once called Chatham Square and is now promoted as Kimlau Square, which is in the midst of a proposed $55 million renovation. For further information, and to register for this free event, use the Jane’s Walk website HERE These tours are, as are all Jane's Walk tours, free.
Dear Stanton Community, Thank G-d in recent weeks we have been welcoming back Israeli hostages returning from Gaza. Israeli citizens are still hostages in Gaza. You can find information on them and on their families' efforts to release them here. Over 1,800 Israelis are dead with many more wounded.
This has been an unprecedented and the most deadly attack on Israel in a generation. We must take action!
In addition to our prayers, we ask you to consider making a generous donation to one of the listed causes.
The One who makes peace on high, may He bring peace down below to us. Amen
