Yahrtzeit Kiddush for Victims of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

The Stanton Street Shul invites the public to remember with us all those who perished in the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Please join us this Shabbat to honor their memory in the Lower East Side with a traditional kiddush to mark the Yahrtzeit (anniversary) of their passing (sponsored by Dr. Elissa Sampson and Prof. Jonathan Boyarin). We know that many of those who died lived in close proximity to our Shul. Their ongoing struggle to earn a living as poor immigrants reminds us of the necessity of defending immigrant rights and the rights of poor people today. May their memory be a blessing for all of us.

Downtown Va'ad Annual Meeting with Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks: Sunday, March 19, 9-11am

The program is titled Kol Yisrael Areivim: Building Community in the Digital Age and will include highlights, achievements and appreciation, as well as a look into strategies for our future. The event will feature Downtown Va'ad rabbis, lay leaders, and - most notably - Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks. Click here for more info!

Shabbat Hagadol Community Dinner, with Visiting Scholar Rabbi Sion Setton, on April 7

Do you really want to cook on the weekend before Pesach? We didn't think so! Join us for a dairy/pescatarian Shabbat dinner with all the chametz foods you can imagine, on April 7, at the cutest little synagogue in the LES.

We will be having a special guest for this dinner, Rabbi Sion Setton. Rabbi Setton is the Principal of Yeshivah Prep High School. He is a co-founder and member of the Downtown Va'ad and serves as an affiliate Chaplain at New York University. Rabbi Setton will share words of Torah during the dinner on the topic: "How to celebrate Pesach - Sepharadi Style."

Prayer services will begin at 7:20 pm, and dinner will start at approximately 8:00 pm. Due to the high demand and lack of space, registration will close on April 4 at 7:00 pm, unless we sell out earlier. Please click here to register for the dinner ($30 members; $35 non-members; $100 very appreciated sponsors, includes dinner for two).

Purim Recap and Thank Yous

We had an amazing Purim at Stanton this year, thanks to so many of you who coordinated events and food, layned megillah, donated charity, shook groggers, wore crazy costumes, sent mishloach manot, pretended to sing, and added a festive air to the whole weekend.

Congratulations to lip-synch champion Judith Hinkle! Congrats also to costume competition winner Sharon Itkoff (aka Andy Warhol)!

(For those who missed the lip-synch competition, you may never again have the opportunity to see Rabbi and Rebbitzen Bodner, and baby Jonah dressed as a monkey, lip-synch to "A Whole New World" from the beloved, newish Disney classic Aladdin. But you can watch it on Facebook!)

We not only had great attendance and energy at our community Shabbat dinner with Hadassah, StantonKIDS program on Shabbat morning, megillah readings on Purim night and day, our Purim Party on Saturday night, and a very successful Mishloach Manot project which raised money for the shul and built community among members (pause to catch breath...) We also were able to donate nearly $3,000 for matanot la'evyonim (gifts for the poor) to individuals in our community, as well as to the NYU Student drive for the homeless and needy on the Lower East Side, Project ORE (Educational Alliance) Purim Seuda for the mentally ill and homeless, needy families in Riverdale, and to Masbia kosher soup kitchens. Thank you to all who donated!

Thank you to Rabbi Bodner for coordinating these charitable efforts and so much of the Purim experience at Stanton.

Thank you to David Waxman for layning megillah for our traditional readings Purim night and morning. (We're told hearing "Santa Claus" read megillah was a first for many!)

Thank you to all of the layners for the Women's Megillah reading on Purim night: Aliza Deutsch, Rivky Friedman, Rishe Groner, Ray Katz, Sarah Lazaros, and Zipporah Nagel.

Thank you to Wendy Chin and David Tuchman for putting together and sponsoring, along with co-sponsors Judith Hinkle and Jeff Katz, our Purim Party & Lip-Synch Competition, and for sponsoring Sunday's post-megillah Purim Seudah Brunch.

Thank you to Risa Gerstein, Judy Josephs, and Sam Weisblatt for help setting up, and to Aliza Deutsch, Risa Gerstein, Mayer Sinensky, Judy Josephs, and Raffi Abelson for packing up our communal mishloach manot packages (and to the StantonKIDS Sunday morning program participants for decorating).

Thank you to StantonKIDS program coordinators and leaders, Danielle Bendavid, Lindsey Bodner, Aliza Deutsch, Elissa Sampson, and Laura Weisblatt. Thank you also to our sponsors for this month's StantonKIDS program, Zvi and Bruria Spies.

Finally, thank you to all of you who showed up and helped to make Purim so much fun.

Next up: Pesach!

(Please note, if we have forgotten to thank anyone individually, by name, it is not because of any malice but rather because we took our Purim partying a little too seriously and are fuzzy on some of the details...)

Volunteering at Stanton

One of the many strengths of our shul is the variety and multiple talents and abilities of our congregants. It takes a lot to run our shul and our programming, and we can probably use your help. Are you a tech guru, web design aficionado, or social media wiz? A master event planner, fundraiser, or program coordinator? An accountant, lawyer, or investment professional? A trained carpenter, electrician, or contractor? If you have any of these or other skills, professional or amateur, that you'd like to contribute to Stanton, speak to Rabbi Bodner, Rivky Friedman, or another member of the board and let's think about how we can help make Stanton flourish together.

Planned Giving at Stanton

Looking for a way to give back to Stanton, not right now, but maybe at some point in the future? Consider planning a long-term gift to the shul. We encourage anyone interested in discussing various ways to plan a gift now that will be given in the future to contact Board members Michael Gordon or Rivky Friedman, or Rabbi Bodner. There are many ways to go about planned giving and we are happy to discuss the various options that might work for you.

The Stanton Street Shul is proud to be a member synagogue of
