Tenement Chic North: Ornamentation and Architectural Tour of the East Village

Our friend Barry Feldman will be giving an East Village walking tour on Sunday, September 15, at 10:45am.

Garish grotesques, mythical beasts, beautiful botanicals, ornate cornices, columns & pilasters -- these are but a few examples of architectural ornamentation that adorn otherwise drab tenements throughout the Lower East Side.

Who were the anonymous artisans that created these treasures?

What developments in building technology allowed for these applications?

What motivated developers and landlords to increase their costs to accommodate them?

Join urban historian Barry Feldman, our housing specialist, for further exploration of tenement history and ornamental architecture north of Houston.

There will be opportunity to analyze, compare, admire and discuss a wide sampling of building facades as you walk the streets of the East Village. Additionally, the development of the tenement and the architectural styles of nineteenth and twentieth century townhouses will be discussed

Help Stanton Go Green

As a community we are beginning to be more mindful of ecological concerns. For a long time we have been attentive to recycling our waste materials.  Now we are beginning the battle of removing plastic utensils from our kitchen and kiddushim.

A set of stainless steel silverware has been purchased, toyveled, [ritually prepared], and is ready for use.  In the coming weeks we will replace plastic cups with dish washable alternatives.  Please see Jeff Katz or Jill Slater to discuss these improvements.
