Community News and Announcements

Matanot L'evyonim - Giving to the poor, is a central mitzvah of Purim. The obligation is to give a gift of food or money, sufficient for one meal, to at least two poor people. The more one gives the better. If you choose to give matanot l'evyonim through our shul, please make your donation in advance of the holiday by clicking here so that we know how much will be able to distribute to those in need on the holiday.

 

On Tuesday night (Feb 20th, 7:30 pm) our new Introduction to Jewish Observance Class co-taught by Lindsey and Rabbi Bodner began. Close to 20 participants learned about the Halachic process and the foundations of Jewish Law and practice. All those who would like a practical perspective on Jewish observance, especially beginners and conversion candidates, are welcome to join! Volunteers Needed! On Sunday (Feb 25) we will be packing the community Mishlochei Manot that will be given to members on Purim. If you can help pack on Sunday afternoon, please contact us at office@stantonstshul.com.

THIS SUNDAY - StantonKIDS Purim Party! Feb 25, 11-1pm

Please dress your child in costume for the event- we will have a parade together! We will be decorating masks, and making mishloach manot as well. Feel free to bring some kosher healthy treats to include in your child's mishloach manot (no nuts please). We will be serving pizza for lunch, so come hungry!

Women's Reading of Megillat Esther on Purim

Once again, we will be holding our annual Women's Reading of Megillat Esther on Purim Night, Feb. 28 (Wednesday Night). All women are invited to attend, in costume, with noisemakers in hand!

WEDNESDAY NIGHT - Open Mic Comedy Night on Purim Night - Feb 28

Are you a comedian? Have you always wanted to perform standup or improv for a friendly audience? Purim Night at the Stanton Street Shul is your chance!! If you are NOT a comedian, but enjoy laughing, you're in for a treat. At 7:45PM, after Megilla reading, we'll be having a comedy open mic hosted by Dana Friedman! Performers will get five minutes to give us their best, funniest stuff.  If you wish to perform register in advance by e-mail to office@stantonstshul.com, and tell us how you'd like to be introduced at the mic.

Women's Discussion Group - March 4 @ 1:30 pm 

Join us for a discussion group engaged in Jewish learning and explore topics that matter to us in a female-powered, supportive, encouraging space where you can talk about all things women-related in the Jewish community. Scholar in Residence: Eve Jochnowitz: Seasoned with Song: Sacred Music of the Ashkenazic Sabbath Meals - Shabbat, March 17, 12:15pm

On Saturday, Mar. 17, following Kiddish the Stanton Street Shul, welcomes Yiddishist and cultural scholar Eve Jochnowitz, for a talk entitled “Seasoned with Song: Sacred Music of the Ashkenazic Sabbath Meals.” All are invited to attend regular services or a special women’s tefillah, beginning at 9:30 am, Kiddush, and the talk, at around 12:15 pm. Sponsors are welcome!

Shabbat HaGadol Community Shabbat Dinner - March 23

Do you really want to cook for the weekend before Pesach? We didn't think so. 

Join us for this dairy/pescatarian dinner with all the chametz foods you can imagine. Please register for the dinner ($30 members, $38 non-members, $100 very appreciated sponsors, includes dinner for two) on our website.

Second Night Communal Seder with Rabbi Aviad Bodner - Saturday Night, March 31

Join us for a meaningful and uplifting Passover seder in the Lower East side with the Stanton Street Shul community, where we will experience the exodus together and regard ourselves "as if we had come out of Egypt." All are welcome and all will feel welcome. The cost is $45/person for Stanton members, $60/person for non-members, and sponsorships ($150 includes two seats at the seder) are available. Registration will close on Friday, March 16th.
